Microsoft - the company I love to hate - has actually done something nice for once…. released new fonts! The company released the new fonts in its latest version of the business favourite - Office 2007. Yes, they’ve been out for a while, but it’s only as I’ve spent the past few months using it every day that I’ve realised, it’s actually quite a pleasant set of fonts they’ve used.
I’m nearly sure I’ve written in the past about the brutal new interface of Office 2007, if you can’t remember, take my word for it! (Clever pun!) But the fonts are what I’m really about in this post. They’re lovely. And thankfully, a nice man at Rushi’s Ramblings has wrapped them up in a nice little ZIP file for all to enjoy. Gone is the default dependancy on Times New Roman and Arial, and in comes Cambria and Cailibri. Yum yum.

Go get OpenOffice (http://openoffice.org) available for
PC, Linux, Solaris (SPARC), Solaris (x86), Linux PPC, FreeBSD and Mac OS X
or
NeoOffice/J (http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/index.php) for Mac OS X
Both work with Microsoft doc and xls file formats - as well as writing a mind numbingly large number of different file types. Neither supports docx, but then again neither does anything else except Office 2007…
The other thing to remember when deciding where to spend your hard earnt Euros is that both OpenOffice and NeoOffice/J are open source, free-to-download-and-use software products. Donations are welcome, but essentially the price is most certainly right.
As you mentioned fonts though, does Office 2007 provide a Garamonde font family? Arial and Times New Roman are predominantly used for magazines, Garamonde (and associated fonts families) are used for book printing - because it’s actually easier to read off the page…
Take it easy.
Cheers,
Gary
